I have worked for over 30 years in the mental health field. In that time I have had the privilege and opportunity to listen and I have found listening to be one of the most powerful tools for problem resolution and healing. My experience has included: 1) 24-hour crisis help phone lines; 2) on-call assessment at hospital and homes for crises; 3) adolescent behavior modification and programming; 4) adolescent group therapy; 5) environmental engineering for adolescent concepts and behavior; 6) working with juvenile sex offenders; 7) foster care therapist; 8) foster care caseworker; 9) foster care supervisor; 10) foster care licenser; and 11) adult chemical dependence therapist for group and individual therapy. Listening to people is so important prior to and throughout the work we do in mental health. Listening to how a person: 1) integrates experiences; 2) differentiate themselves from others and events; 3) develop surrogates for significant psychological factors that they have missed out on; 4) handles vulnerability; 5) works through family and cultural myths; 6) consolidates their identity; 7) enters the process of hypothesizing/fantasy work/dreaming; and 8) sets up and addresses their healing is vital to working with any individual. My experience has taught me how to do this type of listening whether I am applying a cognitive, behavioral, marital, developmental, crisis, dynamic (understanding), tool or technique. I have found those I have worked with to speak about all of these things in a single sentence and that using these areas of listening to have greatly improved the therapeutic results of any technique or model I have used. I have a great deal of experience that I would love to use to help people heal and grow.
