Through community projects, sculptures, installation, photography, video, and performances, my current body of work examines various aspects of our relationship to food as a social tool and our relationships to others with food as the catalyst. The concepts of cultural hegemony, the birth (and rebirth) of gourmandism and notions of conspicuous consumption have ultimately effected the way we consume in contemporary culture. The food we collect, prepare, and present has been and will always be immediately politicized, an inevitable fact considering food is dictated by economic class structures, geographic value, political authority and religious traditions. Our relationship to food shapes and culturally defines who we are and how we interact with others. My current investigations are biological and social steppingstones to comprehend how we use culturally-defined consumption of food and the ritual of eating to interact with others around us. By presenting my work through social practices, interactive performances and installations along with elements meant to initiate visceral responses of hunger, satiation, pleasure, and pain, I encourage the viewer to challenge their perception of food as merely a means of sustenance. I direct my participating audience to understand the significance and socially-constructed power of food that molds our cultural, political, and economic positions in this world.
