Materials For 3D Printing

Lexington, Massachusetts, United States

My responsibilities was measuring and calculating the density of the Mixed Metal Composites (MMC) sample, to determine the overall porosity of this material. These MMC were produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) additive manufacturing. I took images of the MMC with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to perform image analysis/segmentation with MATLAB. The MATLAB program was able to measure the area fraction of the given image via greyscaling the image. The pores on the MMC had a darker contrast then the surrounding material. This task inspired me to learn more about the MATLAB software and this experience greatly improved my programming skills. I had the opportunity to operate the metallography microscope for performing further characterization of the MMC samples, in conjugations with the Zencore software.

Teaching Assistant

Lakeland, Florida Area

My primary task as a teaching assistant was to help the students with their fundamental understanding of the course. In order to achieve this, I organized and facilitated weekly recitation sessions for the students, where in each session I would be going over practice problems selected by the professor. I really enjoyed for taking the opportunity to help students understand the subject matter better and see improvement in their grades. My other duties include proctoring exams, grading homework/classwork assignments, and grading exams. I was a teaching assistant for a variety of engineering courses including: Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, and Dynamics; as well as Differential Equations for mathematical department at Florida Polytechnic University.

Research Assistant

Lakeland, Florida Area

This research project was under the guidance of Dr. Melba Horton and funded of the NASA-FSGC (Florida Space Grant Consortium) for developing a carbon dioxide scrubber to be used for space shuttles. The carbon dioxide scrubber was using a combination of diatoms, a species of algae, with Polyethyleneimine (PEI), a specialized high viscosity polymer. I designed and simulated a predictable model of interaction of our sample with freely dispersed carbon dioxide molecules, using CAD modeling software SOLIDWORKS. I functionalized the PEI onto the diatom sample, and then used Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy Dispersed X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) for characterization of the sample's property. Afterword I tested the performance of the sample, by flowing Carbon dioxide onto the sample, using both FTIR and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to confirm Carbon dioxide capturing. Statistical analysis was performed to test between different sample trials to quantitively determine the effectiveness of our sample (different trials included different variables).
