I was employed by NATS as a trainee Air Traffic Controller following a rigorous and competitive selection process. I trained in Spain, on a pathway to become an 'area' controller. Area controllers work with radar, and manage a sector of airspace, ensuring a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic. I completed six weeks of classroom based theory with eight exams on meteorology, aircraft, law, equipment, navigation, air traffic management, human factors and professional environment. These were followed by training on radar simulators and summative exams based on the simulator training that I had received.

I worked in the Open Source Data Analysis team in HMRC. My role involved taking part in and managing analysis projects involving open source data. I collected data and information relating to a wide range of tax related topics from open sources such as the web, social media and the dark web, often using complex web data collection/extraction tools. I then analysed this data to result in meaningful, actionable analysis that was presented to stakeholders in the form of reports and presentations. I gained skills such as project management, working in an Agile way, presentation (both to people from a technical background and those with little technical knowledge), report writing and data visualisation. I also learned the importance of working as part of a team. This included giving and receiving constructive feedback on analysis products produced by the team. I also attended data science conferences, giving me an insight into how data science works, and how it can be put to use in a wide range of scenarios.
