Profile bio

About Christopher Taylor

For almost 20 years prior to entering the law, I worked in construction management. For most of the 1980's I was employed by some of the larger contractors in Queensland Australia working on a diverse range of projects including high-rise apartments, office buildings, shopping centres, and hotels. During that time I developed an expertise in addressing distressed projects and often called upon to bring projects back on track. With the economic downturn and collapse of the construction industry in Queensland in late 1989 / early 1990, my attentions were drawn to the international construction market. In the 1990’s I was predominantly active in Thailand, Singapore, the Maldives, and Burma, whilst consulting on projects in the Middle East, Guam, and the Philippines. In that period I had my own project and construction management company, at its height employing up to a team of 32, specializing in hotels, resorts, and prestige residences. Following the Asian economic crisis of 1997, in 1998 I returned to Australia, obtained my law degree, and was admitted as a Solicitor in early 2002, very quickly thereafter developing a legal practice specializing in building and construction matters. Notwithstanding this change in profession, I retained my builder’s license in Queensland. In November 2011 I was called to the Bar in Queensland where I now practice. With my principle Chambers in Cairns, and visited Chambers in Brisbane, I am called upon in matters across the State. Naturally, my main practice is building and construction law, but I also advise on and appear in property and partnership disputes, body corporate debt recovery, and general commercial matters. I have a passion for alternative dispute resolution, particularly arbitration. I am an accredited arbitrator and mediator, and a registered Senior Adjudicator in Queensland under the Building Industry Fairness (Security of Payments) Act (QLD), having been appointed to a range of complex adjudications up to $66 Million in value. In 2019 I was appointed a Sessional Ordinary Member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal where I now sit on various lists hearing matters in Building and Construction, General Administrative Review, Guardianship and Administration, Retail Shop Leases, Occupational Regulation, and Neighbourhood Disputes over Trees.
