• At SRI my position title is “Senior Security Research Engineer” which means my primary research focus is on analyzing and assessing vulnerabilities in systems and identifying threat mitigating methodologies. In reality, I function as a telecommunications development engineer specializing in wireless technologies. • Since 2010, I have extensively studied the LTE protocol specifications and architecture. I am currently supporting in-house development of a LTE instrumentation platform. The platform features an internal SRI custom designed and built tunable (700 – 2700 MHz) RF front-end that can simultaneously receive and transmit downlink and uplink signals. We use a Nallatech FPGA module to perform A/D and D/A conversion and FFT/IFFT processing of the signal through IF interfaces. We use a mix of custom and commercial software in our application to process the waveform and protocol stack. • I enjoy developing custom Matlab scripts and using the Steepest Ascent LTE Toolbox to clarify and confirm my understanding of the LTE specifications and for validating our own models and application algorithms. I have also had the opportunity to apply my knowledge to researching and preparing a assessments on the use of LTE networks by emergency responders and assessing the potential for applying LTE to low earth orbiting CubeSats. • While at SRI, I have also gained comprehensive knowledge and experience working with the GSM protocol. One of my first projects was developing and demonstrating a network of mobile GSM base stations. The effort entailed designing a decentralized GSM network architecture. This allowed each base station to operate autonomously but flexible enough to allow base stations to automatically join a network and start placing and receiving calls from other cells in the network. In parallel the LTE project, I am currently designing a concept to employ GSM base stations on UAV platforms.
