I am a highly-experienced research scientist and academic, with a career spanning an unusual range of disciplines.By early training a biologist, my PhD and postdoctoral research was in the field of cardiac pacemakers and electrophysiology, producing a number of publications and a patent for an electronic circuit. This was followed by almost ten years working in metabolic medicine, using mathematical modelling techniques to elucidate the interrelationships between markers for increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. I then had five years in the commercial sector, leading a team in a very high-profile support role.I have substantial experience of lecturing and course management at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. I have successfully supervised research students an acted as both internal and external examiner for higher degree candidatesIn my current position I am a member of the academic staff of my institution, carrying out an independent programme of research. My main research interests are in the application of trace gas analysis in medical diagnostics. This role spans analytical chemistry, sensor technology and biomarker discovery. My group has recently identified several potential volatile biomarkers for gastrointestinal infection and inflammatory bowel disease.
