Project Lead in the Markets workstream as part of the WA Wholesale Electricity Market Reform.

Secondment to the System Management Market Operations team. Responsibilities included:Daily operations of the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) and contributing to ongoing market enhancement and process improvement. Various ad-hoc analysis tasks are regularly required to ensure efficient market operation and data integrity within the system.Assisting in the evaluation of generations, DSM and network development proposals to ensure supply adequacy in the SWIS.Provide stakeholder support, acting as a conduit between power systems operations and the market more broadly.

In this role I was responsible for the efficient and reliable operation of the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) and the WA Gas Bulletin Board (GBBWA) as part of the WA Market Operations team.As part of the WA Market Operations team, I worked with our team on market participant registration, settlements, prudentials, meter data reconciliation and data analysis. Our team engaged with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that their business needs are met. We were required to deal with issues as they arise in a 24/7 market, and to prioritise issues that may have a financial impact on participants or AEMO. The position required a deep working knowledge of the WA energy sector, from producer to consumer.As well as day-to-day tasks involved in running the WEM and GBB, I also performed analysis into short-term and long-term trends in the energy sector.

A 18 month graduate program rotating through the Market Operations, System Capacity, Market Development and Market Surveillance teams at the AEMO Perth office.The graduate program involved working within and across teams to ensure the smooth running of the energy and capacity markets operated by AEMO. I gained a broad exposure to the Electricity and Energy sector in WA and Australia, as well as specific, detailed knowledge of the Wholesale Electricity Market and the South West Interconnected System and the legislation and regulation that govern them.The graduate program exposed me to a wide range of tasks and responsibilities including:- Day-to-day operation of the energy market, and working with Market Participants to achieve the Wholesale Market Objectives.- Analysing data to ensure the energy and capacity markets are operating in an economically efficient manner and to highlight potential improvements.- Working as part of the System Capacity team to produce reports the Gas Statement of Opportunities.- Understanding energy and capacity markets globally so that AEMO can contribute productively to the current Electricity Market Review being conducted by the WA Government.- Procuring external resources to assist AEMO in undertaking yearly reviews to ensure continued economic efficiency in the markets we operate.

• Vacation placement in the Gas/Generation Team in the Utilities Division.• Learned about the operation of the GE LM6000 gas turbine and the general power infrastructure required by large scale mining operations.• Participated in several major team and individual projects, including creating a statistical model in Excel to analyse gas usage trends to check for metering discrepancies or other potential issues in gas supply and consumption.• Gained good awareness of the importance of health, safety and environment when working on any major engineering project.
