Worked as a protected species observer and PAM (passive acoustic monitor) for various offshore wind geotechnical and geophysical projects on state-of-the-art seafloor mapping and sampling research vessels. Also worked as lead in these roles supervising a small team on vessel as well as documenting regulatory compliance efforts.

Protected Species / Fisheries Observer

Hawaiian Islands

Fisheries observer on longline swordfish and tuna fishing vessels out of Honolulu and California, USA. We were trained to identify all pelagic target and bycatch fishes to species. I have tagged, measured, sampled DNA and released about one dozen live sea turtles. In addition I am trained to tag pelagic sharks of interest with satellite tags, sample delphinids and porpoises for DNA and capture dead sea birds or sea turtles for necropsy in this fishery. We were also trained to measure and identify gear, other foreign vessels, and report any illegal activities we encounter to NOAA-NMFS. Data collection during and entry after each deployment was performed.

Primary research involved spawning performance of marine finfish including black sea bass and southern flounder. Involved in designing and performing research projects including most facets of marine aquaculture for example, algaculture, larviculture, egg quality, measuring spawning performance by manipulation of environment such as compression photoperiod and temperature.

Graduate Research Assistant

Wilmington, North Carolina Area

Worked as a marine aquaculture research associate under the mentorship of Dr. Wade O. Watanabe. Specialized in broodstock management of southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma, and black sea bass, Centropristis striata. Assisted in larval rearing experiments in an experimental hatchery, which included construction and maintenance of larval and algal tank systems. Additional experience with PVC plumbing and fiberglass tank assembly. Part of my research involved using NMR (Nuclear magnetic resonance) to study various phosphorus compounds in developing finfish eggs, in vivo. Also, organic chemistry techniques were used to separate fatty acids from these eggs and then identification and quantification of these fatty acids was performed using gas chromatography.
