My interests involve using mathematical analysis and modeling to improve understanding of the physical world. I consider working on any topic that I do not totally understand fun (which means just about everything {smile}). I consider myself a scientist that has advanced mathematical/computational analysis skills and experience, and is good at and likes working with his hands.I am a numerical/functional analyst who spent most of his mathematical career working with differential-difference equations of mixed type, with bi-stable reaction terms and diffusion terms consisting of both forward and backward delays. This includes the development of techniques to study the behavior of solutions (both analytical and numerical), and the investigation of applications for which these equations are a natural description, applications which possess a regular discrete spatial structure and evolve continuously in time. The mathematical aspects of my work include solution construction, stability analysis, Lagrangian formulation, collocation software, convergence, etc. The applications on which I focus are interface motion in crystalline solids (materials science) and action potential propagation in nerves (biology). I have instructed both undergraduate and graduate courses in partial differential equations, numerical analysis, and dynamical systems. I have also mentored dozens of undergraduate projects where students learn to work as an applied mathematician. This includes designing and teaching capstone courses where students learn work from the design and implementation of experiments through the modeling to the analytical and numerical solutions and solution behavior. They learn to become critical of their own and existing models, of approximation techniques, and of data. They also learn to communicate with and to appreciate experimental scientists.
