Once the environment was corrected as operations manager, it was apparent that the founders had a lot more they felt I could contribute. I implemented our first database, standardized all forms, created our own domain, and currently I am working to automate the application, and adoption system. The software is cloud based and eventually will handle the efforts of many volunteers. Further, I have improved the overall image of Almost Home, initiated PR programs, television coverage, and better web and social media use. I also maintain the atmosphere, personnel, and moral. My most ardent task now has become developing a more stable funding stream. Almost Home never kills an animal ever, a terrible business model but the mission of Almost Home and why it was begun 10 years ago. Adoptions have increased 47%, but our donations are 90% single donors. While we have great relationships with local businesses, and a few large corporations, my efforts now are to find and get our message out to private foundations. We operate as the spearhead in a movement to eliminate the needless killing of animals, and are unique in the Detroit Metro area.

I was hired on a temporary basis as I was already working with other clients. My mandate was to access to day to day operations of the facility, determine what needed to be corrected and maintained. It was a hostile environment, hygiene was corrected, drug storage corrected, potential for cash theft eliminated, and embezzlement by misusing hours worked corrected. Further SOP, and policies were formalized and implemented. Despite my best efforts to correct attitudes and culture eventually most of the existing staff was replaced. Dangerous practices were eliminated, bite incidents were reduced by 72%. Payroll was reduced by 34%, without a staff reduction. In the end the culture of Almost Home and Animal shelter and Rescue is now one of pleasant professionalism.
