I am an experienced consultant being a chartered engineer, chemist, and scientist as well as a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Mining and Minerals. I specialise in Safety and Environmental Management of materials, including hazardous materials management, materials assurance, materials selection, corrosion, and the advanced characterisation of materials. I have an established background in materials science with a PhD in materials engineering and a master’s in chemistry. I am widely published in my field being first author of 16 articles, co-author of a further six as well as a contributor to two books. I call upon my wide practical knowledge of materials to suggest solutions to problems from the macro to the nanoscale.

Christopher Mallinson work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Work involved the investigation of the behaviour of second phase particles in beryllium using scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy to acquire Volta potential and topographic data to assess their role in pitting corrosion. This work involved the extensive use of a Bruker Dimension edge system. I coordinated the introduction of remote access software enabling a significant increase in the utilisation of capital equipment out of hours. I actively developed workflow guides for equipment to support new users and enable them to use instruments more efficiently.
Industrially Sponsored Phd Researcher
My PhD was sponsored by the Atomic Weapons Establishment and focused on the investigation of chloride induced pitting corrosion of beryllium. This work made extensive use of the scanning electron microscope based techniques of energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy to study the corrosion process at the micro and nanoscales. I collaborated with internal and external researchers to generate solutions for their unique problems and produced five publications in fields different to my own. I designed two projects for final year engineering students and supervised them during their work. I also completed seven advanced materials short courses, accredited by IOM3 and IMechE to obtain a broader understanding of materials science. By actively engaging with manufactures and learning the skills required to maintain equipment I was able to decrease system downtime and repair costs. Additionally, by implementing computer hardware upgrades I reduced instrument downtime caused by software performance issues.
Fourth Year Research Project
Performed research focusing on the imaging of DNA-protein structures using AFM to examine the structure orientating effect of the DNA on the protein molecules. Tapping mode was utilised to acquire images of the soft biological specimens which were bound to a mica surface. This work introduced me to the stringent requirements of working in a clean room environment and the importance of acoustic and vibration dampening required for ultra-high resolution imaging.
Student Researcher
As part of a European Research grant I researched various metal nitrides and carbides as more corrosion-resistant electrode materials for use in Zinc-Air-Batteries. The project involved the use of inert atmosphere techniques, glove box protocol, tube furnaces and working with hydrogen at high temperatures.
Third Year Research Project
Investigated the use of sol-gel chemistry and thin film metal nitride synthesis to produce macroporous materials capable of absorbing light in the visible region. This research involved the extensive use of inert atmosphere techniques including glove box, Schlenk lines and inert X-ray diffraction. I extended my experience in mass spectrometry, NMR and SEM.
Student Researcher
Provided research support involving X-ray diffraction and inorganic synthesis for various crystalline samples. This work provided me with experience in the use of an X-ray diffractometer which I used unsupervised after initial training. Throughout this research project, I used crystal structure databases as well as 3D crystal visualisation software applications to produce problem sets for first year chemists.
