Over the course of my summer internship with the office, I observed numerous court transactions and in-house client meetings. Some of the types of arguments I observed in court centered on post-release supervision, pre-trial conferences, motion in-limine hearings and trial itself. I also had the opportunity to work with two Assistant Attorney Generals on their preparation for a trial which they won in July. In preparation for the trial, I poured through the entire file (approximately 500 pages) to compile the plaintiff's version of the events and the defendant's version of events. These documents were then used to prepare the defense's witness' and defendants as well as disprove plaintiff's version of events on the stand through the use of testimony and photographs. In the course of preparing for this trial, we traveled to Green Haven Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison within the NYS Department of Corrections.Working at the Attorney General's Office also exposed me to depositions. I was able to sit in on plaintiffs and defendants depositions on the same case. I was able to see the differences within their stories and recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each side. I was also able to meet with clients of the office in initial intake meetings to obtain their side of the story.I have also engaged in complex litigation research centering on damage calculations for false imprisonment cases and tolling of class action cases. I have also done basic research to complete drafts of summary judgment and other dismissal motions.
