About Chris Paton
I have several transferable skills from many years of working in broadcasting and historical research, as well as from constituency case work and research for elected members of the Scottish Parliament. With an interest in Gaelic, I am currently studying for a Certificate in Higher Education in Gaelic Immersion at the University of Glasgow (until May 2025), and have raised funds for the An Lòchran Gaelic centre in Partick, Glasgow.I produce regular content for various family history magazines, and have written 22 genealogy books published in the UK & Australia. A member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, I teach short courses through Pharos Teaching and Tutoring Ltd, and have tutored on the University of Strathclyde's postgraduate certificate programme in Genealogical Studies. I currently edit the monthly eNews for the Association of Professional Genealogists as a contractor, and have regularly lectured in the UK and overseas.From 1995-2006 I worked for 12 years in the TV industry, as a researcher & producer/director of factual documentary programmes, mainly for the BBC, but also Channel 4 & STV.From Jan 2018-Jan 2019 I worked as a caseworker for Scottish Parliament representative Ruth Maguire MSP, Cunninghame South, & prior to this, from Aug 2016-Feb 2017, part-time as a researcher for Kenneth Gibson MSP, Cunninghame North. I serve on the user forum for the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland and was previously a non-remunerated director of the Scottish Archive Network Ltd for four years. From January-October 2021 I served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Professional Genealogists, and from 2021-2023 served on its International Affairs Committee. Finally, I'm married with two sons, am trained in the deadly arts of Laphroaig, and I am not afraid to use them!
