In 1966, after receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Film & Television and completing a year of Graduate work at the film school at San Francisco State University, Barbee hit the ground running as a cameraman and editor in the wildly creative atmosphere of San Francisco in the sixties.His work was noticed by network television producer Lee Mendelson, of Charlie Brown fame. During the next ten years with Lee Mendelson Productions, based in Burlingame, California, Barbee co-produced, directed, edited and photographed nearly 40 hours of live-action, prime-time network specials and series. During that time he earned a number of awards including the George Foster Peabody for his work as Co-Producer and Director of Photography and Supervising Editor of the NBC network series “Hot Dog.” He also earned an Emmy for his work as the Director of Photography and Supervising Editor on the CBS network special “It’s Been 25 Years Charlie Brown.”In 1978 Barbee moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Hollywood. By then, his work had come to the attention of Academy Award winning Visual Effects artists Douglas Trumbull (2001, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blade Runner) and John Dykstra (Star Wars) and he was hired by them as a Visual Effects cameraman on Paramount Pictures “Star Trek - The Movie.”Since then Barbee has worked as a Director and/or Director of Photography on scores of notable projects, including feature films, commercials, TV magazine shows, documentaries, large format Vista Vision & 70mm “ridefilms” and television series such as the highly acclaimed, long running comedy series “Night Court,” where he won two consecutive Emmy nominations for best lighting in a comedy series.Chuck Barbee is a retired Director member of the Director’s Guild of America, and a retired Director of Photography member of the International Photographers Guild and the Society of Operating Cameramen in Hollywood.
