Dr Chunyi Li is one of the leading scientists in antler reseaerch in the world. He received his doctor degree on antler stem cells and regeneration in 1997 from Medical Schoolof University of Otago, New Zealand, and then employed by AgResearch to further his antler study. Antlers are a fascinating model for biomedical research. Annual renewal of antlers offers unique opportunities to explore how nature has solved the problem of mammalian appendage regeneration. Unprecedented growth rate of antlers provides a rare system where fast cell proliferation is elegantly regulated without becoming cancerous. Dr Li has published approximately 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals. A highlight of his career was his plenary lectures in the 1st and 2nd International Symposium on Antler Science and Product Technology in 2000 and in 2004 respectively, and in the 6th International Deer Biology Congress in 2006.
