Freelance Ecologist
I am sub-contracted by a variety of ecological consultancies accross the South of England to carry out phase 2 bat surveys, bat transect surveys and reptile translocations. I liaise with and supervise contractors in place of project managers. As a trustworthy individual with a proven track record of reliability, I was assigned to a full day reptile translocation where I was the main point of contact in person for six weeks. This was a brilliant opportunity to oversee an entire translocation project, including the various developments that arose, dealing with issues and enquiries from involved parties and playing a part in the direction of the works there.
Seasonal Field Officer
Carrying out practical conservation management on ARC's nature reserves in Dorset.
Trainee Ecologist
Setting up and carrying out protected species surveys, removing animals from development land, performing surveys to monitor populations after development, analysing survey data, supervising destructive works carried out by contractors, assisting project managers with their work load and learning about the different aspects of being an ecologist in a busy consultancy.
Forestry Assistant
Assisting with vegetation clearance and tree felling on a variety of sites across Dorset and the New Forest. During this role, I developed my skills with the chainsaw and other power tools, and my fire management skills. We worked on a number of conservation projects for organisations such as the Forestry Commission and ARC Trust.
Seasonal Field Surveyor
Carrying out protected species surveys and removing reptiles and amphibians from development land.
Volunteer Ranger
This placement was split between the Castle Ward estate at Strangford and Murlough National Nature Reserve near Newcastle. The three months at Castle Ward involved estate maintenance, such as removing ivy from tree and buildings, vegetation clearance and community engagement. Five months were spent at Murlough helping to manage the rare sand dune system and building a natural play area from scratch. Teamwork was an essential part of these roles, as was the ability to muck in and withstand the often harsh winter weather on the dunes.
Events Assistant
Assisting with events for adults and children at a popular and busy country park. Activities ranged from cycle rides, guided walks, nature education and face painting in addition to daily running of the park and visitor service.
