    Infection Biology Thematic PhD candidateThesis: Modulation of TFF1 and MUC5AC expression by Helicobacter pyloriMy research project looked at the interaction of the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori with host proteins expressed in the gastric mucosa. H. pylori is a chronic human pathogen that colonises the hostile environment of the human stomach. The majority of the bacteria reside in the mucus layer, where they interact with the mucin MUC5AC and the trefoil peptide TFF1. Using a range of molecular techniques, I investigate the role that these host proteins play in bacterial colonisation and determine whether the pathogen modulates their expression to promote infection.
