I’m a senior civil servant economist with experience of leading large, multi-disciplinary analytical teams to deliver transformational change across a range of policy areas, with spells in the Cabinet Office, BEIS and the Home Office.My current role is in Defra where I am responsible for evidence and analysis to underpin reforms to farming policy in England. Farming policy is undergoing the biggest change in half a century as area-based subsidies are phased out and the annual farming budget (£2.4bn p.a.) is re-purposed towards environmental public goods.This requires significant evidence input bringing together environmental science with economic analysis, data science and modelling, behavioural insights, and an extensive programme of monitoring and evaluation. I oversee a large analytical division (c.70 FTE) to achieve this. We work with policy and delivery colleagues on everything from strategy setting and problem diagnosis through to detailed intervention design and delivery.
