Manufacturing EngineerTerex Corporation Jan 2018 - PresentOmagh, Northern Ireland, United KingdomDuring my time with Terex I have had a variety of roles and responsibilities. Starting as a Graduate Student, I was placed in one of the Main Build Assembly areas where I was responsible for the management and implementation of Engineering Changes for machines being built in that area. It was important to communicate these changes to the floor by means of updating Standard work information and meetings with the Production staff. I was also involved with the setup of parts both on the system side by creating manufacturing bill of materials (MBOM), and the physical setup of parts on the line by means of Kanban and Visual Managed Inventory (VMI). Another key role I had was providing support to the production staff on the floor with any queries they might have had. Identifying part numbers required for machine assemblies and providing documentation on part fitment if gaps where noted in the standard work. As my knowledge progressed, I started to take on the responsibilities of New Product Development (NPD) within the site. My time at Terex saw many new Prototype machines coming online where I had to help in the preparation and introduction of the machine to the shop floor. Such work involved me creating layout plans on Draftsight to see how we could best utilize floor space based on the machines footprint. Creation of Draft rigging plans for lifting operations which involved calculation of forces acting on chains/slings sitting at certain angles. I was also responsible for creating Standard work procedures on how to best build the machines, taking into account safe working practices such as keeping assemblies modular and on the ground rather than working at height. I was also involved heavily in the capturing of issues (snags) on the floor for new prototype machines and communicating these issues to the required persons to help resolve them. This was done by means of Model reviews using Creo and daily meetings. -
Maintenance TechnicianDrenagh Sawmills Limited Jul 2011 - Dec 2017Limavady, Northern Ireland, United KingdomMy first part-time employment was with Drenagh Sawmills where I started summer work shortly after finishing GCSE's. I was first introduced to the final stage of the timber process where I was involved with cutting & stacking quantities of timber into bales specified to costumer requests. I worked with equipment that included Cross-cut Saws & Band Saws where I got my first exposure to maintenance work when carrying out daily pre-use checks to ensure equipment run correctly. These checks also involved me following Lockout-Tagout Procedures to keep everyone safe within the area of work. As I became more competent in the Sawmill I then progressed on to operating some of the Automated machinery within the Sawmill. I gained valuable insight working with these machines, learning the different functions the machines and the components used for them to carry out these functions such as sensors and pressure plates. This helped me with fault finding when having issues during running. Other general maintenance work included changing Saw Blades and Teeth for chipper drums where the waste timber was sent to for sawdust production. As I enjoyed this type of work, I requested if I could join the maintenance team within the sawmill where I could work on more complex issues. This role involved me changing out bearings on roller drums and broken links on chains that feed timber to the saws. Replacing seals on hydraulic rams where leaks where spotted by machine operators. I also got to try my hand at Mig and Stick Welding, learning the basics and patching any cracks or damaged steel parts though the site. -
Placement Manufacturing EngineerHyster-Yale Group Jul 2015 - Jun 2016Craigavon, Northern Ireland, United KingdomI had the great opportunity to work with Hyster & Yale during my Placement year. My time in Hyster introduced me to many areas that involved the processing of Raw materials into a final product. Such processes included the programming of TRUMPF laser bed machines, where I was trained in how to best utilize sheet steel material to keep waste to a minimum whilst reducing costs per part. I was also involved in the processing of flat steel parts into folded components, how different dies are used to achieve the desired bend radius and the programming of Automated Press Equipment to fold parts in a timely manner. I was giving the opportunity to work on a number of projects during my time at Hyster, one of which involved the relocation of a welding assembly area within the factory where I had to follow a Project plan and ensuring tasks were completed within a certain timeframe, allowing for a smoother transition. This ultimately lead to freeing up space to setup a new weld assembly line, to suit a new style of electric forklift truck to keep up with the ever changing market. Work which involved me creating basic draft floor plans of how the line would look in its new area. Other projects I worked on involved setting up new ABB robotic welders to help ramp up production. With these new welders came the need for new jigs designs for the welded assemblies being produced. Jigs which featured RFID tag technology that I got some insight with. I also had the opportunity to program some of the simpler welding operations on the robots. Creating routes of travel for the welder to take in as little moves as possible to reduce the cycle time taken to complete the assembly. I found this work very rewarding when getting to switch on the robot and seeing it work. Overall, this was a fantastic opportunity for me which help me gain valuable insight into how a manufacturing plant operated.
