Hawaiian Coastal Restoration Intern
WWOOF stands for Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms and is a network that connects farmers and volunteers. This organization gave me the opportunity to travel to Hawaii and work on a beachfront airb&b property where we focused on restoring the coastline. The work involved removing invasive species growing along the coast and replacing them with native species that protect against erosion. Working alongside other students is so fun and we explore the island together. If you like agriculture and travel, then WWOOFing might be the perfect opportunity for you!

Site Coordinator With Rutgers Cooperative Extension
During this internship, I worked alongside registered dietitians and other professionals that work together at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension in Passaic, NJ to implement a education program for fifth grade students at School 15 in Paterson, NJ. The program focused on teaching kids how to compost in order to mitigate food waste in schools and student homes. I worked as a Site Coordinator for Rutgers Cooperative Extension which meant that I visited two 5th grade classrooms weekly to teach given lessons. We also needed to find a new way to create lessons for the students due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which involved both Site Coordinators creating short 2-minute videos on agricultural topics such as growing lettuce greens and different ways to start composting at home. The cooperative extension was able to work with the school administrators during the pandemic to provide tools for each student to participate in the video lessons while at home.
