Ironically, it wasn’t until she became a mother that she learned that it may be what we don’t do that could have the biggest impact. Providing creative opportunities can backfire when children become dependent on adult intervention. Cindy will share how with resolve and strategic provocations educators and parents can allow students to embrace boredom, find their own creative escapes, and become the self-directed learners the future will require.

Foley worked to reimagine the CMA as a 21st century institution that is engaging, meaningful and transformative --an institution that impacts the health and growth of the community by cultivating, celebrating and championing creativity. She envisioned and led the charge to open the 18,000 sq. ft. Center for Creativity in 2011. In 2013, the museum received the National Medal for Museums in recognition of this work. Foley has co-authored a chapter for The Manuel for Museum Learning, 2015 as well as guest edited and wrote chapters for Intentionality and the Twenty-First-Century Museum, for the summer 2014 Journal of Museum Education.In 2012, Foley received the Greater Columbus Arts Council Community Arts Partnership award for Arts Educator. She keynotes numerous conferences including: 2018- California Art Education Conference, Tennessee Art Education Conference; 2017- Museum Next Conference, Missouri Art Education Conference, VASCD Conference; 2015- Maryland Art Education Conference, Art of Education Conference; 2012- Ohio Art Education Association Conference. Foley is also on the faculty of the Harvard Project Zero Classroom Summer Institute. In November 2014, she was a TEDX Columbus Speaker presenting Teaching Art or Teaching to Think like an Artist and in 2016, she was asked to again take the TEDX Stage to present The Benefits of Boredom. She has also been a CreativeMornings Columbus speaker on curiosity, 2018.Foley is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the Museum, she was with the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art and the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus. -
