I specialize in being the outside eyes for final copyediting of proofs. I look beyond typos for errors in language usage, inconsistent fonts and type sizes, page numbers matching referents, captions matching photos, and more. As a result, the customer gets a final product that meets expectations. I have proofed 12 products of the Water Education Foundation including annual reports, symposium proceedings, layperson guides and online tools: The Water Education Foundation 2022 and 2021 Annual Reports; On the Edge of the Next 100 Years, Colorado River Symposium Proceedings, 2022; A Virtual Forum: Navigating Through Crisis, Colorado River Symposium Proceedings, 2021; the educational Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta map; the Delta Explainer; the "Layperson's Guide to the Klamath River Basin," the "Layperson's Guide to Water Conversation," "Layperson's Guide to the Delta," the "Layperson's Guide to California Water,'' "The Layperson's Guide to the Colorado River," and "Solving Water Challenges in Disadvantaged Communities: A Handbook to Understanding the Issues in California and Best Practices for Engagement." I also proofed a book for the foundation that celebrated the 100th anniversary of a regional water district.

My classroom experience helps me set expectations, stay calm in the event of unexpected behaviors, adjust teaching to students' needs, and use humor to have a good day. I respond appropriately to escalating or dangerous student behavior, keeping students safe. I leave thorough notes.

Taught grades 7/8 in language arts/social studies. Supported students by front-loading background knowledge, academic vocabulary, and by using models, graphic organizers, sentence stems and frames, and Cornell notes. Expert in using Study Sync, Academic Vocabulary Toolkit and National Geographic curricula.Adjusted instruction and helped students set learning goals with data from the MAP Growth test (NWEA) each trimester. Used Google Translate to communicate with Spanish-speaking parents and students.In 2019-20 , taught grades 4/5. Raised salmon fry to teach science standards. Prepared students for annual musical. Used Wonders, Academic Vocabulary Toolkit and Eureka Math curricula.

Taught summer school for a small class of fifth-graders, focused on reading fluency and basic math mastery including fractions.

Taught language arts intervention lessons to students in grades K-6, using Tier 2 lessons from Wonders curriculum, and Road to the Code. Met one-on-one and with groups. Recorded pre- and post-test data to help administrators determine next steps with improving reading accuracy for these select students.

Substitute taught for elementary schools in grades TK-6, including special education classes. Served several school districts including Dry Creek, Elk Grove, Folsom Cordova, Marcum-Illinois, Natomas, Winship-Robbins, Woodland and Yuba City -- as well as the California Montessori Project. Explored cultures of different districts and schools after moving to Sacramento from Fresno, where I served students for 10 years in four schools with markedly different student populations.

Fostered a sense of community in a challenging classroom by building relationships with students. Improved students' abilities to work together by organizing STEM teamwork activities. Taught Second Step, and used Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports. Used GoGuardian to manage challenging student behaviors. Began student success team meetings to meet emotional and academic needs of key students.

Taught fourth grade, and electives for grades 4-6 -- keyboarding/blogging, Science Olympiad, gardening, Farm to Fork. Taught state standards through novels, Wonders, GoMath, and Write Tools strategies. Raised and released salmon fry to learn about rivers, ecology and animal life cycles. Incorporated art into lessons. Students had meaningful jobs, and held regular class meetings. Blended online learning into instruction. Used Class Dojo for parent communication with 100 percent participation! Launched and administered school's Facebook page.My autistic students, through structured class routines, peer support, and the hard work of their excellent paraprofessional assistants, made significant gains academically and socially.

Tackled challenging classroom dynamics for a temporary school opened to handle overflow of students in southeast Fresno during recession, when many families doubled up in housing. Students from four schools came to one school two miles from their homes. Worked with three principals to create school culture. Worked with school liaisons to communicate with families who spoke Spanish and Hmong.

Taught with direct instruction in language arts and math, differentiating for students who spoke Spanish, Hmong, Punjabi and Russian as primary languages. Incorporated Whole Brain Teaching strategies, graphic organizers, pre-teaching of vocabulary, sustained silent reading, mini-labs to teach science, and art to teach social studies. Managed challenging behaviors.

Replaced retiring teacher. Brought students up in knowing basic multiplication facts -- from 0 in 24 students to 16 by June. Taught language arts through reading circles during English Language Learner and Resource Services pullout groups.

Produced news releases, annual report, brochures, newsletter, fact sheets. Maintained media contacts. Coordinated web site content. Collaborated with other First 5 organizations on regional media outreach efforts, and advised funded partners on their public relations work. Planned participation in legislative advocacy events. Worked under both full-time, and contract arrangements while working on my teaching credential and raising three boys.

Wrote feature stories on religion and ethics, home and garden, parenting; assigned photos and graphics for local and wire stories. Collaborated and edited features stories with reporters.
