University of WolverhamptonHead of Equality & Diversity Unit (2011 to 2016)I was promoted into role as senior subject matter expert and unit lead on D&I issues, including staff equality objectives and measures, E&D training and Staff Equality Networks. I was tasked to establish the university as a sector leader for tackling long-term and highly challenging E&D issues. Key achievements include: ☛Established an Equality Training Officer role. ☛Rolled out new Dignity at Work training programme using video scenarios developed in-house☛Established and led a working group to consider the D&I implications of the staff opinion survey, recommended actions and monitored. ☛Increased university presence at events such as Wolverhampton Pride & Birmingham Pride. ☛Sponsored/oversaw production of Wolverhampton Black History Month Events Programme. ☛Formalised the role descriptions for Staff Equality Network officers and negotiated dedicated time allocation.

In this role I consolidated work to promote equality for BME, disabled and lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGBT) staff, identifying opportunities for joined-up working. Key achievements include:☛Streamlined activities by creating a Single Equality Scheme, combining previous race, disability and gender schemes ☛Introduced equality and diversity briefings for senior management and governing body. ☛Established a new disabled staff network. ☛Established disability equality objectives through thematic focus groups.

In this role, I focused primarily on disability issues. Established, managed and developed a central service to provide specialist support to deaf/disabled students at the university. - Overturned an inherited budget deficit in year 1 by revising service charges to external funders.- Developed a support worker service, including recruitment, training and monitoring of sessional staff.- Established disability equality objectives through thematic focus groups. - Introduced new university wide policies on assessing disabled students, confidentiality / disclosure and supporting students with mental health needs.- By 2008 the service employed 20 full/part time staff and 100+ sessional staff. Its annual budget was £1.5M.

Managed the Disability Services team, which provided specialist dyslexia identification, needs assessments and support worker services for disabled students.- Secured £150K through a Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) competitive funding stream for a collaborative project to extend the support worker service to Aston and Birmingham University.

Designed, delivered and evaluated disability equality training for training providers funded by Birmingham Training and Enterprise Council (TEC) and Birmingham City Council.

Designed, delivered and evaluated a pilot program to teach introductory French and German to disabled people on OUTSET training courses.

Foreign language assistant- Provided conversational English language support at a school for visually impaired pupils in Germany.- Taught English 1:1 with two pupils requiring additional support.
