About Charles Porter

I've been in the software industry for 20+ years (15 at Microsoft), so I either love working on software or I'm a masochist (it's the former). After 12 of those years in games/entertainment/VR, I love working on interactive experiences - which I'm doing again a Project Archer. Previously, working on the future of immersive computing at Envelop VR emphasized my love for the future of human-computer interaction leveraging VR. After shipping dozens of products across Windows, Office, games, and VR, I love knowing that I've had an impact, and I've helped make tens of millions of people's lives better.Besides knowing what it takes to ship high-quality software and delight customers, I also love being a leader, a mentor, and a manager - whether by being a excellent, empathetic direct people manager, or by being a key driver of a team's culture. I love creating an environment that helps people really enjoy our work together. Not surprisingly, I also love games - both playing and building them. I know games - my video game trivia team is feared. And I deeply understand games - I don't even need to read instruction manuals anymore! You do not want to get into a high-score battle with me.Most importantly, though, is that I love working with people. And I strive to make sure I'm someone that people love working with. I've been exceptionally successful at this; coworkers and partners will attest to this, and that's one of the things I'm most proud of.I've had 12 years of management experience, 12 years of game industry experience, and 10 years of PM/Producer experience. I've shipped dozens of products across multiple platforms, and hundreds of updates to those products. I've filled a number of different roles, and established myself as someone who's exceptionally well-rounded while capable of going deep in a particular area. And I have a reputation for reliably getting things done and shipping.

  • Microsoft
    Software Test Lead/Manager
    Microsoft 1999 - 2008
    Microsoft Redmond
Filled a variety of rolls during this time period - the initial, sole member of the Networking Virtual Build Lab's (NetVBL) BVT team. An individual contributor on the Networking Configuration and Test Team (NCITEST), simultaneously with the previous role, then promoted to the lead of that team. And finally, a lead on the Office Live Meeting team, then promoted to manager of another lead. In these rolls I managed 4-8 full-time employees and 4-8 contract staff concurrently. While in Windows Networking, I shipped Windows XP and Server 2003. During the initial Windows Vista development timeframe I moved over to the Office Life Meeting and shipped Office Live Meeting 2007. I was initially brought on to help get development of the Office Live Meeting addins back on track, which I did. Finally, I moved to managing the audio/video/recording test team, which was responsible for testing the first Microsoft Roundtable audio/video conferencing client.During this time period I also designed and researched a Six Sigma project on issues affecting the NetVBL, which culminated in a presentation to executive management, authoring an article for an internal Microsoft newsmagazine, and changes to our division's development processes.
