My current research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of novel polyolefin materials from ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). For my first project, I synthesized a saturated epoxy-telechelic polyolefin using a novel chain-transfer agent. The resulting polymer was crosslinked using photoacid generators and characterized by photorheology, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and tensile testing. These elastomers could then be compared to unsaturated polyalkenamer elastomer derivatives. Currently, my work focuses on the functionalization of monomers for ROMP. Polyolefins with polar functional groups are hard to make using traditional methods, and the resulting materials have a variety of applications.

As a graduate teaching assistant, I taught both Advanced Organic Chemistry Lab and Organic Chemistry Lab. in Advanced Organic Chemistry Lab, I was responsible for approximately 20 upper-level students and guided them through challenging independent experiments. In Organic Chemistry Lab, I was also responsible for about 20 students taking organic chemistry lab for the first time, helping them learn introductory organic chemistry techniques.

As an RA, I was responsible for approximately 20 students each year, ranging from first-year students to senior students. I planned events to increase engagement in residence communities on both small and large scales. I also was trained in conflict resolution and emergency response and utilized these skills when necessary.

As an undergraduate teaching assistant, I taught Lab II: Organic Synthesis and Analysis. In this position, I helped students guided students through nine experiments focused on organic synthesis and other organic chemistry techniques.

As an undergraduate researcher, I synthesized, purified, and characterized novel mechanophores for incorporation into mechanochromic polymers.

Greater Pittsburgh Area

During this summer research position, I focused on the synthesis, purification, and characterization of novel conjugated monomers for polymers applied to organic photovoltaics.
