Broadening the Representation of Academic Investigators in NeuroScience (BRAINS) is a University of Washington-based program designed to accelerate and improve the career advancement of neuroscience postdoctoral scholars and assistant professors from underrepresented groups including certain race, ethnicity, and disability statuses groups.

Launching Academics on the Tenure-Track: an Intentional Community in Engineering (LATTICE), a joint effort between the University of Washington, North Carolina State University, and California Polytechnic State University, is a national program to advance faculty diversity in engineering. LATTICE includes a professional development intervention and a research study to understand why the intervention works. LATTICE was created in 2015 with funding from an NSF ADVANCE award (HRD-1500310). LATTICE seeks to positively impact early-career women in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and early-career underrepresented minority women in Engineering who are interested in faculty careers. LATTICE participants will gain a stronger sense of career self-efficacy and sense of belonging through a combination of symposia, peer networks, and other support structures over a two-year period. The long-term goal of LATTICE is to diversify the national engineering faculty population.

Directed independent research program and managed laboratory focused on understanding the primary factors affecting species’ distribution and maintenance of biological diversity and to understand how anthropogenic activities influence natural communities and ecosystem processes. Work spans multiple taxonomic groups (i.e., insects, microbes and plants) in both aquatic and terrestrial study systems. Major focus is on the distribution of microbial communities and their influence on ecosystem processes in aquatic systems, invaded ecosystems and hypoxic zones. Taught undergraduate biology courses, including introductory biology lecture to 500+ students. Chaired graduate student committees and advised undergraduate and graduate students. Developed grant proposals and secured funding. Developed and directed national programs for professional development for early career scientists.

Supported analyses of the feasibility and impact of potential NRDA restoration projects. Contributed to technical analyses as part of an ongoing, real-time evaluation of the Agriculture Subprogram of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Conducted rapid-turnaround scientific literature reviews to support a range of projects, including those assessing climate change impacts on natural ecosystems. Examined ecological patterns of co-occurrence and relatedness for diverse communities of microorganisms from a range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. This work demonstrated that like “macrobes”, bacterial communities tend to be more structured and more closely related than expected by chance. Thus by comparing microbial patterns with those of macroorganisms, I identify unifying patterns and processes across all domains of life and highlight the potentially unique features of microbial biology that influence the generation and maintenance of diversity.
