Development Of A Compact And Portable Soft Implant For Tissue Regeneration

Sheffield

Gastrointestinal tissue disorders pose significant health challenges, with malabsorptive conditions like short bowel syndrome (SBS) necessitating innovative solutions. This study introduces a novel approach using a soft implant with adaptable tensioning, designed to exploit tissue regenerative properties and alleviate malabsorption. Central to this research is the development of a soft robotic device replicating peristaltic motion, holding potential not only for SBS but various gastrointestinal issues. However, achieving optimal cell adhesion onto the device's hydrophobic silicone surface presents a critical hurdle. To address this, a method involving fibronectin, an adhesive glycoprotein, is proposed to enhance cell attachment. The primary objective is to establish a technique for uniformly coating the device with fibronectin and facilitating an even cell layer application. Initial strategies include a meticulously designed motor-driven rotational mechanism, ensuring sterilization compatibility, adaptability to diverse geometries, and incorporation into an incubator-like environment, acknowledging the constraints imposed by the incubator's size. Additionally, considerations for sterilizable contact points between the motor and device, an enclosed container akin to a laboratory bioreactor, and an adjustable attachment method to accommodate changing geometries and designs are integral to the study. This research constitutes a crucial advancement in gastrointestinal tissue engineering, with broad implications for regenerative medicine applications.
