About Clare Benson
I am an Electrical Engineering Graduate from McMaster University as of June 2023. I am currently working as a Project Manager at Hydro One.Throughout my degree I delved heavily into the utilities industry upon completing a 4-month internship at Fortis BC as a transmission lines engineer and a 12-month internship at Hydro One as a Protection and Control Engineer. Both these positions were very technical as I worked directly on high voltage equipment across Ontario and British Columbia. During my time at Fortis BC, I worked with PLS CAD and PLS POLE to model transmission structures and run structural and electrical simulations. This position gave me valuable experience out of my home province and allowed me to better understand how the utilities industry differs in different landscapes. During my time at Hydro One, I used Auto CAD to edit and create logic diagrams, and various IED relay programming software’s to update settings for GE, Schweitzer, and Siemens protection relays. I also completed a 4-month internship at Labatt Breweries, where I managed my own project that aimed to minimize energy consumption of manufacturing equipment. I was the project lead at ACCESS Tech, an organization I established in 2019 at McMaster University that refurbishes old electronics to give them a new life and reduce the amount of electronic waste the campus generates. To date we have upcycled 3500 kg of electronic waste and are rapidly growing. I have also been heavily involved with the Women in Engineering Society as coordinator of Outreach and Social for the past 3 years, instructed and developed curriculum for a Girls STEM club, and been a part of many other outreach events aimed to target young girls such as Go Eng Girl, Girl Guide Day, and the Ambassador Program. I am currently the president of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Society and a Welcome Week Representative for the Engineering faculty. Throughout all of these experiences I have gained valuable communication, collaboration, time management, and problem solving skills. Throughout my undergrad, I have also gained valuable technical skills while working with a variety of software’s and coding languages such as CAD, Java, Python, C, and Matlab.
Listed skills include Leadership, Teamwork, Time Management, Microsoft Office, and 1 others.
