Profile bio

About Clarissa Eibl

I received my Ph.D. in the field of structural biology from the University of Salzburg, Austria, in 2012. Within the doctoral program "Immunity in Cancer and Allergy," I wrote my thesis on a class of innate immune receptors termed NLRs. For my first Postdoc, I joined Prof. Peti's group at Brown University to learn more about protein phosphatase structures and NMR spectroscopy. In Prof. Plested's group, renowned for his work on ionotropic glutamate receptors at the Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie and Humboldt University Berlin, I used a combination of structural biology and functional experiments to unravel the molecular mechanism underlying receptor gating. This work was part of the ERC funded GluActive grant and supported by a Schrödinger Postdoctoral Fellowship (FWF, Austria) and the Wiedereinstiegsstelle (FMP, Berlin). The extensive experience on the structure function analysis of neuroreceptors lays the basis for my new endeavor. I recently joined Prof. Obermair's group to investigate alpha2delta subunits from voltage gated calcium channels.

Listed skills include Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Western Blotting, Cell Culture, and 23 others.

Clarissa Eibl work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Berlin Area, Germany

Within the interdisciplinary group of Prof. Andrew Plested, I am leading the structural biology branch. We clone, express, and purify soluble and membrane proteins to high purity for structural and functional characterization. So far, I solved >40 crystal structures, two of which got published (Salazar, Eibl et al. NatComm 2017, Zhang et al.BiophysJ. 2017)). Currently, single-particle reconstruction from our Cryo-EM data collection at EMBL Hamburg is in the pipeline. I proved structural modeling to be a powerful tool. Functional experiments based on my receptor complex models provided surprising modulation mechanisms (Riva, Eibl et al. eLife 2017).

Oct 2013 - Dec 2020

Research Stay In Eric Gouaux' Laboratory

Portland, Oregon Area

During this research stay, in one of the leading structural biology labs, I received extensive training in membrane protein structural biology, including virus production, large scale expression in mammalian cells, purification and crystallization.
