As a Mexican American minority, I was faced with very limited health insurance opportunities as a result of my parents low-income. I spent most of my childhood being sent around to different physicians in underserved areas that would accept my insurance, and many of the physicians I visited did not seem to genuinely enjoy their careers. My aspirations of pursuing a career in healthcare stemmed from my own experiences of low-quality healthcare and having to switch physicians often, which never allowed me to form a sense of trust or comfort with them. I want to be able to provide aid to others, while also forming meaningful connections to allow others to experience what my childhood lacked.During my time at Mount San Antonio College, I became part of the COPE Health Scholars program at White Memorial Medical center where I became exposed to various hospital departments. While volunteering, I quickly adapted to the hospital setting and positively contributed to maintaining a high-quality work environment and high-patient satisfaction by being detail-oriented. While at the hospital, I became part of a patient care team and worked well with other members of the hospital staff. During my time at UCLA, I became an Outreach Committee Chair for the American Red Cross at UCLA. In this position, I organized fundraisers, assisted in general club meetings to plan upcoming events, and led a committee to plan club outreach events and fundraisers, which allowed me to develop strong leadership and communication skills. I believe that these skills will enable me to work efficiently as a member of the healthcare field.
