Clint Chan is a Computer Science Teacher at Ingraham High School at Ingraham High School. Clint utilizes a variety of instructional strategies in his classes to foster greater student engagement and understanding. He routinely integrates relevant examples into his instruction to cultivate greater meaning for students and to activate background knowledge on which new concepts are to be built. He integrates kinesthetic activities into his instruction to make the material more accessible for students. The climate in his classroom is warm as Clint models courtesy and respect in all his interactions with his students. He has high standards for himself and his students. He has students model solutions on the white board – an excellent indirect means by which to positively reinforce the student who is at the board while fostering student engagement as students come to understand they too might be called upon to model solutions. Additionally it is an excellent strategy to elucidate misconceptions or to demonstrate alternative means by which the problem was solved. Clint also utilizes questioning strategies to move through a lesson while also ensuring all students are engaged with the discussion. He calls on classmates to support students working at the board – making certain that working at the board doesn’t become unpleasant for any student because they know their peers will be solicited to assist. This propagates student understanding in the audience. Clint is the consummate professional. Clearly, his work in his classes, his department, the building and even outside the district has created opportunities for success for our students. His lessons are pedagogically sound and technically well implemented. It is clear that Clint has a passion and a gift for both his content and his craft."
