I completed my first oil painting in 2000. After retirement from medicine I channeled my creative energy into painting full time. I have pursued an independent program of study with workshops and mentors but I have developed my own language. My love for the outdoors and natural vistas is displayed in my landscapes which are often painted outside. When painting in the studio I am often doing portraiture and figurative painting. You have to create a universe in your painting and the character lives within that world. My ideas for paintings come from all around me. Painting is a response to the environment. I like my paintings to carry from across the room. My oil paintings have won many awards and I have been featured in several one man shows. My art career includes many years as a photographer and print maker. Photographs have been featured in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Maine Times and included in the book, Bernard Langlais – Independent Spirit. My favorite painters and influences are Nicolai Fechin, Joaquin Sorolla, Nelson Shanks and Quang Ho. I have a private studio that is on Masonboro Sound in Wilmington, NC.
