I always wanted to know where that red fire engine with lights flashing and siren blaring was going. One day I followed and the Fire Chief put me to work. The reward that came from helping others I found to be beyond price. Today, I have the honor of personally knowing many of the amazing people that provide for the safety of all. In the middle of the night, at times of crisis, these heroes put on gear that completely hides their identity. With professionalism and surgical precision, they enter dangerous environments rescuing and protecting those in need. Afterwards, they return to their homes, put on their regular clothes, and go about their daily routine as though nothing had happened. If you look at them closely, you might see the proud look on their face as they saved a life last night. Otherwise, you'll probably never know as they are unlikely to tell.

Seeking light bulbs. I count myself one of the most fortunate people to have walked the planet. So many have taken their time to answer my questions, shut down what they were doing to help me or just refer me to someone that might know. I feel a responsibility to share with others what has been invested in me. After the classroom portion is completed and the students go outside to try what they have learned, I perch myself on a high point and watch. There will be those who do excellent. There will also be those that it just didn't click for. I help those struggling find that missing piece. It is an amazing experience to take one who thinks that it is not in their ability to do something and see the light come on when they realize that it is.

With all the technology available today, many would think that the old ways are no longer needed. For some missing person's calls, technology has reduced a search that may have taken many hours into minutes. For others, technology is limited in its contribution. The art of tracking opens up a realm that all of us see every day but few know how to or take the time to read. If that child or grandparent with Alzheimer's vanishes and they didn't take their cell phone with them, what then? Certainly the highly trained K-9 with their dedicated handler is a must. A tracker inserted finding evidence of the missing as they go along is a huge bonus. It's important to know that once the track of the missing has been destroyed by a well-meaning searcher, it's gone forever.

After an amazing career in the energy industry, I felt the time was perfect to look for others I could serve. For over three decades I had the privilege to serve in many capacities. Maintaining the integrity of pipeline systems was where I stopped off at for the majority of my time. Mountains of data, cutting edge technologies and figuring out how to take it to the next level was great. Taking a little time to refresh myself has been good. However, I don’t think focusing on me is for me. “Your success is my reward” was part of my emails for the closing years of my career at Enbridge. As I reflected on all that others had invested in me, it became clear that the focus needed to change. Achievements would no longer be considered getting another degree or certification. It would be helping others achieve their dreams. There are a lot of dreamers out there. Those of you who are able, please take the time to help them.

Planning for problems and what else could possibly happen somewhat describes this role. I found developing detailed plans for projects in a previous career the greatest thing. Come go-time so many are looking to you. What did I forget? What if someone gets hurt? Will anyone have a flat tire? Did I make a mistake in writing a formula being used for critical calculations? We know there are times the script deviates. Not that I enjoyed those challenges when they showed up but it was great to be able to announce, “Remain calm. A solution is already being implemented.”Years of observing how others handled issues and some of my own life experiences helped highlight the importance of safety, prioritization and the value of having plans . As important if not more to success is a network of professionals you can talk to. You may have heard something like this said, “Each is my superior in some way. In that I learned of them.” It’s comforting to be in the presence of hundreds of people and know there’s likely someone here that can do what I’m not proficient at. Never leave a meeting/conference/vacation without adding to your contacts.Give all you can without worrying about the return. It will come flooding back if needed. We recently experienced a tornado in our community. No sleep or being able to go to the restaurant for a nice lunch was a possibility. Our community was hurting and lives changed, some forever. I remember seeing our partners flowing through the door saying, “Where do you need me?” Thank you to all who plan for what could and sometimes does happen. At the entrance to our facility it is posted, “Hope is not a plan.”

Maintaining the integrity of steel structures is all about controlling that elusive electron. The required testing and the in-depth analysis of information in this field would cause Sherlock Holmes to abandon this strange enigma and return to solving murders. It seems easier. It is a job where success is measured by not a single person knowing you exist. When the integrity of a high pressure gas pipeline is compromised, unpleasant things happen. A peaceful nights rest and nothing for the news to report is priceless.

Getting TVA's attention when you hit the start button, with relays clicking, check valves banging, the roar of gas venting, while lights dim and the building shakes as the motor gorges itself on electrons is not for the faint-hearted. Such a description does not do justice to this experience. Flow rates, surge curves, pressures, temperatures, electrical loads and potential lightning strikes must be constantly monitored. And your facility is just one link in the chain of this system that crosses the United States. What happens at the next link will affect you. Will you need to take immediate measures or possibly not have to do anything? In the 6 1/2 years in this role, given all the variables involved, it was no wonder no two events I experienced were exactly the same. I liken this job to a symphony where the compressor station operator is the conductor. The operator makes sure the individual contributions are perfect and the music harmonious. To the untrained ear it's just a bunch of noise. To the experienced operator, when everything is working properly it is quite soothing.

Pipeliner responsibilities focus on general maintenance and support roles. Compressor stations are an engineer's dream. The substation alone capable of supplying the energy needs of a small city not to mention the three phase 15,000 H.P. Westinghouse motors is incredible. I loved assisting the electricians as they worked on the motors, breakers, timers, and relays of these beasts. From a mechanical perspective it's one thing to close a 1 inch valve. Try a 36 inch. The main gear for the compressor is taller than the average man. I found the data acquisition technicians to be the most logical people. We poured through what was a skyscrapers worth of control logic. This relay closes after that timer but not until those valves reach 30% open. If communications is your thing, then try microwaves. The capacity of this Baby Bell system is impressive.
