I am Professor Emeritus at Birmingham City University, following my role there as Director of Research for Art, Design and Media. Previously I was Professor of Information Design and Associate Dean of Art and Design at Coventry University. I have been a Visiting Professor at the University of Brighton, a member of numerous boards dealing with UK university education in art and design, and have served on national university research assessment panels. I’m a past president of the Chartered Society of Designers, London, and of the International Institute for Information Design, Vienna. Prior to my academic career I combined my professional design practice, making diagrams and illustrations for aircraft and machine tool technical publications, with part-time university teaching. Examples of my early work in computer aided technical illustration, computer animation and digital art are in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. I hold a PhD from the Royal College of Art for my work on ‘Diagrammatics’. This work has formed the foundation for subsequent research, including my current collaboration with Assistant Professor, Yuri Engelhardt, of the University of Twente, on the development of the ‘Language of Visualization’ (LangVIS).
