2004 -2010: Co-chief Scientific Advisor to the French Government funded CRISP Program (Coral Reef Initiatives in the Pacific) to facilitate sustainable development of coastal resources of Pacific Island countries.

Global Coordinator of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (sponsored by IOC, UNEP, IUCN, World Bank, CBD, RRRC, GBRMPA and WorldFish Center), which is part of the International Coral Reef Initiative. The GCRMN has established networks of communities, governments and scientists in over 80 countries to monitor the status and trends in coral reefs for better reef management and raising awareness. The GCRMN is based at the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre, with the major funding support coming from the Governments of the USA and Australia, as well as Japan, France and international NGOs. The GCRMN published ‘Status of Coral Reefs of the World’ reports in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2008 with special reports on the tsunami and coral bleaching damage to coral reefs.

1991 to 1995: Chaired the UNEP-IOC-IUCN-WMO Global Task Team on Coral Reefs to select methods to assess coral reefs, plan a global monitoring program, select databases and predict climate change effects on coral reefs.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore And Thailand

Southeast Asia as Chief Technical Advisor for the ASEAN-Australia Marine Science Project (AusAID funded). This was collaborative project between 40 leading ASEAN and Australian scientists and resource managers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand (approximately US$1 million per annum). The major themes were capacity building in assessing the status of Asian coral reefs, mangrove forests, seagrass beds, fisheries and considerable remote sensing and database technology transfer. This project developed the currently accepted manual for natural resource assessment #. The experiences of seeing ecosystems in collapse caused the shift from an experimental scientist to an advocate for coral reefs.
