Profile bio

About Michael Close

My career began with a “bang”! After graduating with a BS in Chemistry, I entered the world of explosives R&D and developed new explosives for military and commercial applications. This experience was transformative and established the need for creativity/innovation in my career. This propelled me to Iowa State University for a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry (focus on solid state/material science) and then a post-doctoral fellowship developing new heterogeneous catalysts capable of converting coal (syngas) into alcohols for fuels. Since that time, my career has spanned both the explosives and environmental services sectors and covered the full coal life cycle, from improving/developing explosives used to locate and mine coal to improving/developing SCR catalysts used to remove toxic combustion gases from power plant exhaust streams (NO, NO2, SO2, SO3, CO and Hg).In all cases, my focus has been on how best to bring value to the organization. As a product and process development scientist and project manager, I have worked across functional areas, including HSE, finance production, laboratory, quality, commercial, project and senior management to ensure alignment of key projects with company priorities. I have successfully led the development and commercialization of 10+ new products and processes that have increased corporate profits through cost savings or increased revenue, improved operator safety, product quality, and efficiency and enabled penetration into new markets. Some of my notable achievements include leading the development of a robotic assembly process with automated cutting system that reduced labor significantly, leading recycle strategy initiatives resulting in more the $1M/year savings and developing a new non-catalytic adhesive product that reduced costs by 80%. Through these and other projects, more than $20M in value has been created. As a Laboratory Manager for more than 11 years covering both sectors, significant improvements were realized through expansion of laboratory capability and increased efficiency and profitability. In one role, three new catalytic reactors were added to the laboratory, significantly increasing capacity and profitability. As one manger stated, “you have brought the laboratory to a new level”. A key contributor to job satisfaction is the creative and collaborative process of transforming ideas into value added commercialized products and processes,
