I love music and people of all types, shapes, and styles! Years of training and experience have allowed me to be comfortable sharing music with audiences of all ages and levels of musical backgrounds.I have created, produced, and conducted hundreds of concerts for young people, both for entertainment and education. Whether to introduce all the families and specific instruments of the orchestra, or to demonstrate a topic such as Music from Movies or Great Composers or Music for Dance, I love accepting the responsibility of presenting what might be the first (hopefully not the ONLY) time somebody is inside a concert hall (or school gym or "cafetorium") to hear live symphonic music.I am extremely aware of less usual composers and types of music. It is imperative for our longevity that we explore music by composers besides great Masters of the Past like Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Shostakovich, Copland, Gershwin, and John Adams. I am keenly aware that underserved segments of society must be given great care and consideration. There are wonderful pieces of music by people of color, people from other countries and walks of life, and from all ethnicities, religions, sexual orientation, etc. Performers, too, come from many different backgrounds and experiences, and I delight in exploring how, for example, a bagpipe troupe or Native American instruments or even hip-hop singers and dancers can fit in with our western symphony orchestras. Give me Opera, too!I love Vivaldi's Four Seasons as much as the next person, but I am very proud of the most recent version I created and curated last November 11: the playing of each Season was preceded by the reading of letters written at that time of year by WWI soldiers who never came home, or by their families looking forward to a homecoming that was not to be. I love a great Symphony, but enjoyed working with choreographers to create a Beethoven 7 performance with dancers. I helped write Beethoven Lived Upstairs!I actively seek music by young composers, and coach them in orchestration. I have an assistant who is a young Latina composer of color, and she has been an invaluable asset. I have helped launch the careers of several young soloists, conductors, and composers who got their start with just a little time spent to give them a nudge.In summary, I have my favourite "War Horses" and "Top Ten" and "Desert Island Classics" and have been honoured to conduct orchestras around the world, but take great joy in staying home and working with young composers, singers, dancers, and performers.
