Associate Director of Academic Development Services (ADS), an agile development group with a specific focus on academic web development: software that directly supports instruction and research, the core business processes of the Institute. My roles are that of team coach, project manager, software architect, software developer and Institute liaison and consultant. My work involves designing, building and running distributed systems in the Amazon cloud.Software engineering: * One of two senior engineers researching and implementing Generative AI proof of concepts at Caltech.* Product manager for access.caltech.edu, a large, highly performant, distributed microservices based system. Lead developer and architect on the core components of this system. Project lead on moving access.caltech.edu to the Amazon cloud, using a continuous deployment system and Docker to implement it.* Key architect and implementor on next generation seismic data processing system.* Cloud architect responsible for the majority of core AWS infrastructure at Caltech.* I build and maintain all AWS infrastructure as infrastructure as code (terraform).* All our services are containerized, running in AWS Elastic Container Service. I designed and implemented all tooling around maintaining our containerized services.* Built and maintain most DevOps tooling by my group, including CI/CD pipelines, ChatOps platform, logging and monitoring systems, auto-updating documentation system, Docker base images and others.* Active owner and/or maintainer of many open source codebases.Software engineering leadership:* I manage 4 developers, more than 150 different codebases, and more than 70 services.* My group wrote the software that runs half of the websites at Caltech, including www.caltech.edu.* I mentor and train other software engineers in our department and across Caltech.* I am frequently consulted on architecture, design and incident response analysis on projects outside my group.

Project lead on moving access.caltech.edu to the Amazon cloud.* Lead developer, project manager and architect for the 2012 complete redesign of www.caltech.edu. The 13 month project was delivered on schedule and on budget. Project team of ten people plus a design firm. Budget of several hundred thousand dollars.* Lead developer, project manager and architect of the content management system for the 2013 complete redesign of the websites of five of the six academic divisions at Caltech, Project was delivered on schedule and on budget. Budget of $100k.

Project and technical manager of a four person team of systems administrators and programmers responsible for in-house software development and the design, deployment, and maintenance of centralized UNIX services and systems including main campus e-mail systems and www.caltech.edu. Responsibilities included hiring technical staff, systems administration of key central services, and promoting knowledge management practices.* Project manager for several software development projects of access.caltech.edu: a project to create a campus-wide single sign-on portal. Was lead developer for some of those projects.* Project manager for several key campus infrastructure upgrades, notably the the upgrade of the central e-mail system and the implementation of access.caltech.edu. * Emphasized a software oriented methodology (now called DevOps) in our systems management: wrote automated systems management software, monitoring software and backup software.

In addition to the duties described in the previous position (sole UNIX systems administrator for the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences), became part of a newly formed collaborative team. The purpose of the team was to develop, identify and create shared resources, knowledge and processes to improve support services, and to increase efficiency and consistency across eleven sites at Caltech. Created publicly available, open source software packages used in performance analysis and anomaly detection, data visualization, and automatic installation of operating systems.

Sole UNIX systems administrator for the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, supporting 250 people. Responsible for all purchasing, long term planning, design and deployment of UNIX machines and software. Planned, deployed and maintained the Division’s UNIX infrastructure, consisting of servers providing e-mail, web, file, computational and other services, as well as desktops and laptops. Involved in hiring of technical staff.

Sole UNIX systems administrator for the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, supporting 250 people. Maintained 20 hosts with three core servers supporting mail, web, file, computational, and other services. Additionally, part of a two person systems team in the Department of Computer Science. Team supported approximately 1000 people on 200 hosts. Services provided included LDAP authentication, name service, e-mail, web, and computational services in a fault tolerant configuration. Solely responsible for the Department's IRIX and Solaris machines.

Wrote and maintained data acquisition and analysis software packages, among them xdphys (written in C and used in neurophysiological research on barn owls) and exp (written in C and Tcl/Tk and used in behavioral research on barn owls). xdphys is still used at several sites worldwide. Software was written variously in C and Tcl/Tk and ran under Linux and Solaris. Planned, deployed, and maintained Linux and SunOS servers, as well and twelve mixed OS workstations (SunOS, Linux, Win9x, Win2000).
