A public relations and international business graduate, I started my career in marketing working for an online IT reseller. My main tasks were to build our email lists, manage integrated campaigns, and churn daily promotional newsletters to support our sales efforts. Typical marketing stuff, you might think. Perhaps on the surface, but not when I look back. This first job taught me the very foundations of marketing and the keys to success in this vast and ever-changing field. Teamwork – marketing has become much too complex for one person to know and do it all. To be successful in marketing, you first need a solid team—one that is qualified and compatible. In that first job, I was blessed to work with a talented group of professionals whom I called my friends. We worked madly hard, but we had mighty fun at it. Perseverance – marketing doesn’t have a soft learning curve. This first job was no different than the ones that followed. I had to hit the ground running and learn fast. There was pressure on many sides, but I made it through each and every project on time and with pride in my work. Humbleness – although we were team of strong performers, there were flops and mistakes along the way. Marketing is like quicksand—it shifts and moves so fast that it sometimes pushes you to try new things or do things too hastily. It’s through these trials and errors however that you learn, grown, and refine your strategy. These are some of the lessons that have helped me move with agility from online marketing to partner marketing to PR and communications, from national organizations to international corporations, and will no doubt continue to help me tackle challenges ahead of me.
