I believe in integrating all facets of learner support within education and the experience I have gained working in education in South Africa is invaluable. It has prepared me enough to know that when it comes to academic and mental wellness support, one can never be prepared enough. I contribute to the development of an incredibly multi-cultural and multi-economic group of learners, which means that not only am I constantly tested as a counsellor, but I am constantly growing too.One of my key strengths lies in my ability to read a situation, understand the unspoken need and adapt my approach to the individual. I have developed this skillset as a result of having had the opportunity to work across a diverse range of counselling and coaching roles with children. These include implementing NILD protocols to provide educational therapy for remedial learners, my counselling role on K.E.P.S SBST (School Based Support Team)over the last two years, and also having had the privilege to coach children in a range of sports from swimming and waterpolo to cricket and polocrosse(I am currently Zimbabwe's national junior coach).I am always reminded of the need for a holistic approach to both mental health and academic performance, and have been fortunate enough in my career to work with a number of educational institutions on a variety of levels. One common drawback I have noticed is the rigidity in which support is often offered to human beings - who, by nature of being human beings, are not rigid or one dimensional. This is why I believe it is so important to learn all I can about the children with whom I work; it helps me tailor the intervention to align with their specific support needs. Being able to establish common ground and grow a relationship of trust ensures that the rapport with the children is authentic, and provides a solid platform for engagement and development. And that, is my passion.
