The Southern Cross project consisted of the building of a Fibre Optic transmission network across the Pacific, linking Australia, NZ, Hawaii and US .This involved the laying of Fibre Optic Cable and submarine repeaters across the Pacific and the provision of nine Cable Stations in four countries. My role in the project was to supervise and implement all installation and testing activities in any one of these Cable Stations. Technical: Installation, Acceptance/Commissioning Testing of the following equipment: WDM Submarine Line Terminating Equipment (Alcatel OALW16. OALW40. OALW64) SDH ADM and Digital Cross Connects. Submarine Line Power Feed Equipment Alcatel 4400 & 4200 PABX Newbridge and Cisco Routers Other LAN and DCN equipment Supervision and Maintenance of NMS servers/workstations, running UNIX/Openview Platform. Testing and Supervision of Submarine Cable and Repeaters.Supervision and Management : Supervision, and Quality Assurance of all Station Installation. Supervision of all Acceptance and Commissioning Tests. Evaluation, and implementation of Test and Maintenance procedures. Ensuring compliance, with Occupational Health and Safety requirements. Daily/Weekly reports to System Engineer, Project Manager, and Management. Recording and collating Test Results. Supervision of Testing/Installation staff and contractors. Liaison with Shipping/Custom agents for the proper delivery of imported Test equipment and Hardware. Ensuring schedules for installation, testing, and commissioning. Ensuring compliance of all equipment with agreed Customer Acceptance requirements. Sign off acceptance with Customer.
