Marketing products comes far more naturally to me than marketing myself. As soon as I start to highlight my accomplishments, I can hear my mother chastising me to “be humble.” So, in an effort to avoid bombarding you with a summary of my resume, let me tell you my story instead.Growing up, I was never afraid to ask myself the “big” questions: What do you want to accomplish in life? What is your purpose? Who do you want be when you’re older? In true Socrates fashion, the questions flowed, but the answers never seemed to follow. That is, until I got to high school. A teacher of mine introduced me to graphic design and the advertising industry. I never looked back. I started to focus on developing the skills that would lead me down the marketing path. Everywhere I looked, I analyzed—from magazine covers to freeway billboards and even deals at my favorite skate shop. As I analyzed, I asked myself questions, much like I did as a child: What makes these marketing designs successful? How can I make them better? I learned to channel my creative energy into ideas and concepts.But I felt limited. My high school didn’t have many opportunities to get hands-on experience in the marketing world. Though I was able to work as a retail associate for an interior design firm, I wanted something more. College was that something. As an economics major and business minor, I learned the “what, why, and how” of marketing; and over my summers interning with various firms, I applied my newfound knowledge, coupled with my ever-present imaginative spirit, to real-world settings. As I prepare for the next stage in my professional career, I look forward to continuing to use my skills and interests to create value.
