John Muir National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service)

As a volunteer at John Muir National Historic Site, I support the National Park Service in its efforts to protect, preserve, develop, and interpret the life and contributions of John Muir. I teach visitors from around the world about John Muir by answering their questions and providing tours of his home and grounds. I work with Park Rangers who present public interpretive and educational programs, swear in "Junior Rangers" (young people who visit the park and complete workbooks about John Muir to become Junior Rangers and receive a national park patch), work in the retail gift shop, and run the movie in the theatre. 2016 projects included initiating and suggesting usage guidelines for the official Instagram account for John Muir National Historic Site, volunteering as a biological surveyor with biologists, rangers, and teachers on Earth Day Birth Day to count and record flora and fauna on Mt. Wanda at John Muir NHS, recruiting student volunteers from my school to work at BioBlitz and support our resources department, and working at John Muir Day Camp to engage and teach kids about nature. In 2017, my art was featured in the John Muir National Historic Site Junior Ranger Activity Book, I volunteered at the annual Festival of the Seas “High-Tech on the High Seas: The Evolution of Maritime Culture and Technology” at San Francisco Maritime (NHP), and received a Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of my 415+ volunteer service hours at John Muir (NHS).
