I was a preconstruction engineering intern at Montana Department of Transportation for the summer of 2024. My main project was referencing as-builts and aerial imagery to locate culverts along a 200 mile stretch of I-15, record the locations in ArcGIS Pro, and cross reference my findings with MDT's preexisting database to create a more complete and accurate inventory of culverts. I then visited the sites marked on my map to confirm the location of each culvert, inspect the condition of the confirmed culverts, and record my findings in the map. Because of my work during this internship, MDT's ability to manage and maintain culverts on a major highway as an asset and prevent catastrophic roadway failures due to failing culverts has greatly improved. In addition to this project, I also participated in a week long WAQTC training at MDT HQ to get certified in sieve analysis, nuclear densometer testing, various methods of material sampling, and proper separation of samples. I also performed smaller tasks such as utilizing lidar data to measure sight distance at a highway intersection, helping the district traffic engineer perform a traffic calming study, assisting a surveyor with point setting for right of way acquisition, and researching future project sites to help write a PFR for a bridge guardrail project.

I ran 3D prints and laser cuts, assisted students with personal/school projects, kept the space clean and organized, and did my own projects to improve the space's functionality and organization. I assisted students with woodworking, 3D printing, soldering, laser cutting/engraving, sewing, resin printing, and vinyl cutting, often guiding inexperienced students through the processes to teach them how to do them themselves.
