My responsibilities as a research assistant centred around designing, developing and delivering modern, dynamic and robust learning-focussed web applications. In the IDEA-FAST Project I was part of a pan-European, multi-disciplinary consortium aiming to identify digital end points in neurodegenerative and immune-mediated diseases. Our team supported work packages which identified the hardware and software needed and the data requirements to support the clinical trial. https://idea-fast.eu/In the ENACT project, I developed a web app to bring culture to life by employing an innovative task-based digital learning pedagogy offering a real world, interactive learning experience. I was responsible for the design, delivery and maintenance of the web application using co-design and UX methods to enable stakeholders to contribute to the design. This included evaluating the suitability of software for academic research, including assessing the H5P framework for use within the project. https://openlab.ncl.ac.uk/research/enact-learn-language-through-culture/ In another project,I created a learning analytics platform to help teachers monitor and measure student engagement with class activities.

I conducted my studies within OpenLab, a human-computer interaction research group, based at the School of Computing, Newcastle University. My PhD explored how to design and develop technology to support learning through the creation of digital media artefacts. Adopting a design research methodology, I developed a web browser-based music remixing application and trialled various facets of its design with participants spanning primary school, secondary school, FE and HE students, as well as teachers, lecturers and local musicians. I have presented findings concerning my design approach using UX in this project at internationally recognised conferences.

Digital Civics aims to develop and bolster our understanding of—and critical engagement with—technologies in contemporary society, particularly its intersection with space, society, and democratic involvement. Through engaging with the role of a spectrum of technologies, my MRes explored both the intended use and broader consequences of the use of digital technologies. The role of technology was considered through the lens of citizens, governments and organisations and I developed a strong methodological base in design thinking, participatory design and user experience (UX) working with local communities and schools.

As a lecturer in audio and music I was responsible for creating and delivering lecture content, designing, delivering and marking assessments, undertaking quality assurance in the form of internal verification work. I had leadership responsibilities for the delivery of Higher Education modules and was a personal academic tutor to first year students.
