Leadership. Integrity. Transparency. Faith. Friendship. Family. Community.These words have never meant more to me. Over the past year I’ve seen those words play out in various scenarios and other times I’ve seen opposite. But tonight I want to share a story very near and dear to my heart.As a black female growing up in Kalamazoo I rarely saw images of people who looked like me in public leadership positions. Over the past year I’ve seen those words play out in various scenarios and other times I’ve seen opposite. But tonight I want to share a story very near and dear to my heart.As a black female growing up in Kalamazoo I rarely saw images of people who looked like me in public leadership positions. In most cases there weren’t any; in some there were a few but those few women never rose higher than a certain level.Then I met a person named Mrs. Eva Ozier. She was poised, purposed and on point! She would go on to make history as the only Black women to have ever served as vice chair of the Kalamazoo County Commission and yet have the longest tenure of any commissioner at serving 22 years. Mrs. Ozier is my SheRO and is the reason why I proudly accept this position as CHAIRWOMAN OF THE COUNTY COMMISSION!You know power is a funny word. People do a lot for it. Sadly some believe a title, a position, even where one sits is the most important way to demonstrate power. Yet when I think about Commissioner Eva Ozier and the years she had to sit and watch being overlooked, never being regarded as good enough to be chairperson and yet she maintained her conviction of spirit and her integrity...well that’s real power. I salute you Mrs. Ozier!2018 presents this County Board of Commission an enormous opportunity to demonstrate our ability to focus on the charge at hand with leading and guiding our county’s services and programs in ways that make fiscal sense and places the interests of our County in the forefront and not petty partisan politics.
