Now more than ever, funding for charitable organizations is contingent on their ability to measure impact. Grantors, donors, and foundations ask nonprofit organizations to demonstrate, “What difference are you making?”Likely, you've got the quantitative measures down. How many people did we serve? How many of them had a "good outcome?" How many of them were happy with our services? That's good! You'll need that info.But, what may be a bit puzzling to think about are the qualitative measures. What difference did we make?The leaders I work with are often at an important phase in the organization’s development and may need guidance on how to measure the impact of their work. Establishing an outcome measurement system to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative impact of programming is the first strategic step that leads to(1) Improving your ranking as a charity by national organizations, as a vetted choice for philanthropists. (Candid, Charity Navigator, etc.)(2) Demonstrating the difference you make to donors, foundations, and grantors. (3) Sharing impact information with stakeholders through your website, promotional materials, fundraiser events & campaigns, and annual reports. (4) Making informed decisions about future programming, including expansion, modifications, improvements, and more.
