I learned to be an archivist at the Wisconsin Historical Society, 1969-70, and was hired by the University of Vermont (UVM) as Curator of Manuscripts at the Guy W. Bailey Library in the summer of 1970 and subsequently served as University Archivist, Head of Special Collections and Director of Research Collections at Vermont. On my first sabbatical I served as an archivist at the University of Illinois Libraries , 1977-78 on an American Library Association Fellowship while I completed a master's degree in Library Science. On my second sabbatical I served an an archivist for U.S. Senator Robert T. Stafford, 1988 and U.S. Senator Patrick J. Leahy, 1989. I retired from Vermont in 2006 as Library Professor Emeritus, served on a federal grand jury for a year, and then worked as an archivist for the U.S Senate Judiciary Committee in the fall of 2008. Since my retirement I have been doing appraisals of books and manuscripts for persons who donate these collections to universities. I continue to serve as a volunteer member of a number of boards including: University of Vermont Center for Holocaust Studies Advisory Board (Secretary), the UVM George D. Aiken Lecture Series, the Vermont Academy of Arts & Sciences Board of Trustees (former President and VP), the Craftsbury Chamber Players Board (Secretary and former VP), Deborah Rawson Memorial Library Board of Trustees, and the Underhill, VT Historical Society (VP). I am a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists (2005), a Fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts & Sciences (1999), received the Distinguished Service Award from the New England Archivists in 2000 (former President, VP and Secretary), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Research on Vermont (2015). I also served as President and VP of the Vermont Library Association, 1979-80.
