As a ServiceGateway engineer I am part of a team which is responsible for the support of the Layer7 platform within Allstate. Layer7(Recently renamed to 'CA API Gateway') is a CA product used for managing and securing backend applications so that data and services can be opened to vendor partners, developers, mobile apps and smart devices.Daily responsibilities include the creation/modification of policies which expose the backend services, troubleshooting issues with endpoints. Monitoring and reacting to alerts thrown by the virtual appliances hosting the endpoints – these may include high disk utilization, cpu usage etc. On call is required by team members on evenings and weekends to ensure high availability of this critical platform.

As an integration engineer within the Middleware platform support team I was responsible for the management and support of the Allstate TIBCO platform. Within Allstate, TIBCO is used by over 1000 applications spanning across 11 departments and numerous environments including test and production. In order to manage such a large infrastructure ITIL processes were implemented by the team. These included: • Troubleshooting problems with the platform via incident ticket.• Tracking major production issues using problem management.• Change management and performing upgrades with change records for weekend releases.• Fulfilment of service catalogue requests for small modifications to the system.• Documentation of knowledge gathered to be shared with other team members.• Generation of monthly reports on volume of incident tickets, catalogue requests and change records.All of these processes were managed using ServiceNow. The monthly reports were analysed to identify areas for process improvement. An example would be the automation of application deployments using Jenkins. This reduced the manual effort required with change management and the team gained valuable experience in supporting the Jenkins tool.
